Jonah Meltzer is based in Ferndale, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from Michigan State University in 2018. Fascinated by the connections between consciousness and material expression, Jonah is inspired by the idea of making different forms of visual or olfactory elixirs. His works suspend elemental ingredients like notes in chords, forming new types of resonance. Informed by metaphysical experiences, he imbues strong feelings, concepts, memories, and associations into material. His works counterbalance spontaneity with measured intervention, a metaphor for discovering meaning and purpose amongst the chaos of life. Layered and stacked color fields reference the spirit of Blinky Palermo, Agnes Martin and Mark Rothko, artists famous for their handling of energized color. Jonah’s fragrances are impressionistic bouquets with alchemical emotional process. Jonah’s work pushes and pulls on tradition while also participating in discourse regarding spiritual identity, esotericism, queerness, the internet, magic, and psychology.
